Building on signaling theory, this paper analyzes whether projects signaling patented technologies have a higher probability of funding success on a reward-based crowdfunding platform as compared with a control group of similar projects. Our analysis of a set of Kickstarter projects suggests the existence of an apparent paradox concerning the role of patents in this funding context. Despite solid evidence in entrepreneurial finance literature on the positive role of patents for accessing financing from professional investors such as venture capitals and business angels, our results from the reward-based crowdfunding context point out a negative signaling role of patents. We provide explanations to reconcile such evidence with previous relevant literature and highlight promising avenues for future research in this area. (601-902-6906)

For those wondering what Kickstarter is, it is just a method of raising finance. It is asking your fans to contribute their money if they want to see you expand. In return they give the fans gifts liked signed books and all if they contribute a specific amount. So, Yutaka Yamamoto the director of Hakubo launched a crowdfunding campaign known as Kickstarter as I mentioned earlier to fund his anime. This Kickstarter is projecting to raise 5 million Yen by only March. That is quite a significant sum of money. The goal of this fan funding is nothing more than introducing English subtitles in the anime. Also, anime will premiere in non-theatrical locations, mostly in public areas and Fukushima students will get free tickets. (Read More)

A new Kickstarter campaign has a terrible solution to your relationship problems

February 20th - via: (646) 623-5478
501-358-6155Three weeks ago, a Kickstarter campaign launched for a piece of technology aimed at improving couples’ communication about sex. LoveSync promises a solution to mismatched libidos. It offers “an entirely new way to increase your sexual frequency and boost your romantic relationship with the simple press of a button.” The idea is simple. Each person in a couple places a button on their bedside table, which they press when they are in the mood for sex. If both partners press the button, there is a match and they are alerted that it’s sexy time. If one partner presses the button and the other doesn’t, “no one will be the wiser.” (Read More)

February 19th - via: techraptor.net
305-883-1384Claustrophobia 1643 is a new take on the original game Claustrophobia, which was originally published nearly a decade ago. The new version of the game came to life courtesy of a unique Kickstarter campaign that was effectively used as a pre-order for the 10,000 copies of the game that publisher Monolith was already in the process of producing. While there were no stretch goals or other typical Kickstarter extras, the good news for people who chose to pledge for the game was that the turnaround time was extremely short from campaign to game delivery. Monolith sent us a production copy of the game, and it’s exactly as advertised. We’ll be following up with a full review soon, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s in the box and talk about our initial impressions. (Read More)

While platformers tend to be all mascots, all the time, there used to be another type that was aimed towards a more mature audience. Not the “blood and boobs and swearing” type of mature but rather a more adult story and movement system to match. The classics of this genre were the Prince of Persia games, Out of this World, and Flashback, plus a good case can be made to add Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssee and Exoddus to the list. It was a type of platformer that slowly faded into obscurity as the Mario-style and 3D adventures took over, but Lunark has been running on Kickstarter for almost a month now in an attempt to create a new entry for the lost sub-genre. (Read More)
